Dirty Words. . . Septic System Page 2
·The use of septic tank additives are not recommended. Additives may cause the sludge and scum in the septic tank to be discharged into the absorption field, resulting in premature failure. Some additives may actually pollute groundwater.
·Don't discharge highly chlorinated water into the system, such as from hot-tubs or swimming pools.
·Avoid using a garbage disposal. The tiny particles it creates will clog absorption fields.
·Prevent heavy machinery and vehicles from driving over your tank and drain fields, which can crush the piping in absorption fields and compact the soil.
·Plant and mow grass over your fields, avoid bushes and trees whose roots can clog and break your pipes and field.
·Direct surface water away from your tank and septic field.
When is the last time you had your tank pumped?
